Downgrading of Food Caterer “Stamford Catering” due to Food Poisoning Incident

52 persons were reported having gastroenteritis symptoms after consuming food provided by “Stamford Catering” located at 24A Senoko South Road, #01-01, Singapore 758099 on 2 March 2019. One case was hospitalised and has since been discharged, and all have recovered.

A joint inspection by the Ministry of Health and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) was conducted at the Stamford Catering premises on 5 March 2019. A high bacterial load was detected in food and environmental samples, which could be contributing factors for the outbreak. This indicates poor personal and food hygiene practices. SFA also found hygiene lapses such as poor housekeeping of appliances during its inspection.

Stamford Catering has since rectified the lapses and stepped up on the upkeep and maintenance of their premises and equipment.

SFA will take enforcement action for the lapses and the failed food sample.

Following investigations, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has adjusted the food caterer’s food hygiene grade to “C” with effect from 9 July 2019, to be reviewed in 12 months, and will keep the premises under surveillance meanwhile. Food operators are reminded to adhere to good food hygiene and safety processes. Infection prevention practices such as the washing of hands before handling food can greatly reduce the incidence of gastroenteritis when adopted by all key stakeholders, including the industry and public.
