{"id":2065,"date":"2021-01-29T19:30:48","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T11:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgtaste.com\/?p=2065"},"modified":"2021-01-29T19:32:09","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T11:32:09","slug":"voluntary-product-withdrawal-of-li-chuan-fish-ball-cuttlefish-ball-from-market-muis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgtaste.com\/index.php\/2021\/01\/29\/voluntary-product-withdrawal-of-li-chuan-fish-ball-cuttlefish-ball-from-market-muis\/","title":{"rendered":"Voluntary Product Withdrawal of Li Chuan Fish Ball &#038; Cuttlefish Ball From Market (MUIS)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4>MUIS&#8217; RESPONSE TO THE DISCOVERY OF PORCINE DNA IN MUIS HALAL-CERTIFIED PRODUCTS BY BRUNEI MINISTRY OF RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>1 On the <strong><em>25<\/em><\/strong><sup><strong><em>th<\/em><\/strong><\/sup><strong><em>&nbsp;of January 2021<\/em><\/strong>, the <strong><em>Department of Syariah Affairs, Ministry of Religious Affairs (Brunei Darussalam)<\/em><\/strong> brought to <strong><em>Muis\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>attention the <strong><em>discovery of porcine DNA<\/em><\/strong> in<strong><em> two (2) of Li Chuan Food Products Pte Ltd\u2019s products \u2013 Li Chuan Fish Ball and Li Chuan Cuttlefish Ball<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; in <strong><em>random samples tested in Brunei<\/em><\/strong>. <br><br><strong><em>Li Chuan<\/em><\/strong> is a <strong><em>Muis Halal<\/em><\/strong> certificate holder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-vivid-red-color has-light-green-cyan-background-color\"><strong><u>Editor&#8217;s Note: <\/u> <br>As the case is still under-going investigation, <\/strong><em><strong>Muis<\/strong><\/em><strong> continue to urge members of the public to refrain from any further speculation until the investigation has been concluded. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong><em>Muis<\/em><\/strong> immediately launched an investigation into this matter. <br><br><strong><em>Muis <\/em><\/strong>officers conducted an inspection of the production plant and retrieved samples of affected products on 27<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;of January. <br><br>The samples have been sent for testing in accredited laboratories. <br><br><strong><em>Muis<\/em><\/strong> will assess the appropriate follow ups once the investigations are completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong><em>Pending the outcome of the investigation, the<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Company has agreed to Muis\u2019 request to withdraw affected products from the Singapore market and halt overseas export of these products<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&#038;version=v9.0&#038;appId=2342672449311172&#038;autoLogAppEvents=1\" nonce=\"LKqi9Q1E\"><\/script>\n\n<center><div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MUIS.SG\/posts\/10158569554446329\" data-width=\"500\" data-show-text=\"true\"><blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MUIS.SG\/posts\/10158569554446329\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\"><p>Assalamua\u2019laikum wr. wb.\n\nWe would like to update the community on this issue which we are currently investigating. \n\nOn&#8230;<\/p>Posted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MUIS.SG\/\">Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis)<\/a> on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MUIS.SG\/posts\/10158569554446329\">Friday, January 29, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><\/div><\/center>\n\n\n\n<br>\n\n\n\n<p>4. We understand that the discovery of traces of porcine DNA in the affected products was made during random DNA testing of products done as part of the Bruneian authorities\u2019 routine testing. <br><br>This practice differs from that of Muis for Halal certification, where our approach is to undertake random sampling of high-risk food products such as meat and meat-based processed items. <br><br>Muis\u2019 checks focus on the ingredients used, production and preparation processes, facilities and compliance records (e.g. invoices, recognised Halal certificates of ingredients used where applicable, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"991\" height=\"698\" src=\"https:\/\/sgtaste.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-14.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sgtaste.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-14.png 991w, https:\/\/sgtaste.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-14-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/sgtaste.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/image-14-768x541.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 991px) 100vw, 991px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Presently, Muis does not adopt routine porcine DNA testing in its processes as we are of the view that DNA testing should be employed only when there is a robust understanding and framework developed, that is agreed upon by religious scholars and experts. <br><br>Muis will continue to monitor the development of porcine DNA testing technology and assess whether it is necessary to include such testing as part of Singapore\u2019s Halal certification process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6.\tMuis notes that there are messages circulating on various social media platforms and networks regarding this matter. We urge members of the public to refrain from any further speculation until the investigation has been concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7.\tMuis would like to reassure the community that it is fully committed to ensuring requirements for the dietary needs of the Muslim community continue to be met.
